How to Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode

In this tutorial, we are going to see how to start Windows 10 in Safe Mode. The Startup Options menu also called Safe Mode in Windows 10 provides users with several powerful tools to troubleshoot the operating system or change the Windows startup behavior, such as booting into Safe Mode or accessing the Command Prompt at startup. In this tutorial, we will see together what this menu is used for and how to access it easily in Windows 10.

In the Startup Options menu, you can choose to:

  • Restore the system from a restore point
  • Recover Windows using a system image file
  • Fix problems that prevent Windows from starting
  • Run Command Prompt
  • Change UEFI firmware settings
  • Change Windows startup behavior
  • Downgrade to the previous version of Windows
  • Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode

There are several ways to get the Startup Options menu. Here are 3 of them, starting with the easiest ones.
 

 

Method 1: Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode Using Settings

Step 1: Open the Start menu and type: Recovery Options, then click on it.
 

 
Step 2: Under Advanced Startup, click on Restart Now.
 

 
Step 3: When you restart your PC, you will get the Startup Options menu.
 

 

 

Method 2: Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode Using Power button

Step 1: Click on the Start menu, then click on the Power button.
 

 
Step 2: From the drop-down menu, hold down the SHIFT ⇑ key, then click on Restart.
 

 

 

Method 3: Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode Using CMD

Step 1: There are two ways to open the command line. Click on the Start menu, type CMD in the search box, then right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Or press WIN + R, type CMD, and press Enter.
 

 
Step 2: In the command prompt window, type the following command, then press Enter.

shutdown.exe /r /o


 
You will then receive a warning. Click on close.
