How to Enable Numlock at Windows Startup

In this tutorial, we are going to see how to enable Numlock at Windows startup. Does your laptop have a numeric keypad (the “numbers” part on the right of the traditional keyboard) but it is not activated at computer startup? Here’s how to make the “Num Lock” key active every time, i.e. enable the numeric keypad lock on computer startup, on Windows 8, 8.1, and Windows 10. This usually refers to laptops with a screen of 15 inches or more, which have a keyboard with numbers on the right side.

How to Enable Numlock at Windows Startup

Step 1: Right click on the Windows Start button and choose Run.

Step 2: Type “regedit” and click on OK.

Step 3: Accept “User Account Control” with “Yes”.

Step 4: Go to HKEY_USERS > .DEFAULT > Control Panel > Keyboard.

Step 5: On the right side of the screen, double click on InitialKeyboardIndicators.

Step 6: Set the “Value data” field to “2” and confirm with OK.

Step 7: Go to Windows Desktop and right click on the background image and choose Personalize (at the bottom).

Step 8: In the window that opens, click on Lock Screen.

Step 9: Scroll down and click on the link Screen timeout settings.

Step 10: Again scroll down and click on the link Additional power settings.

Step 11: In the window “Power Options” click on Choose what the power buttons do

Step 12: Clicking on Change settings that are currently unavailable will unlock some options.

Step 13: In “Shutdown settings”, uncheck the option Turn on fast startup and click on “Save changes” button. This is certainly not “recommended” as indicated, but it is the only solution and besides a slightly slower startup, the numeric keypad will be activated every time the computer is turned on.

Step 14: Restart the computer.

Note: To go back and undo this change, return to InitialKeyboardIndicators and set the value to “0”.
