In this tutorial, we are going to see how to change the default action on connecting a USB device Windows 10. By default, when you connect a USB drive or other external storage device, Windows 10 automatically opens its contents in File Explorer. However, you have the option to change the default setting for auto-run. In particular, you can tell Windows to do nothing or to always ask you for the execution. In this tutorial, we are going to see the different options that Windows 10 offers when you connect a USB drive or other media to your computer.

How to Change Default Action on Connecting a USB Device Windows 10

Step 1: Click on the Start button at the bottom left of your screen.

Step 2: Click on Settings.

Step 3: Then go to Devices.

Step 4: In the left pane, click on AutoPlay. To disable auto-run completely, regardless of the media used, disable the Use AutoPlay for all media and devices option.

Also, you can change the setting for all devices connected to your computer. For example, under “Removable drive” (USB stick, external hard drive/SSD, etc.), you can choose the option Take no action to disable AutoPlay or “Ask me every time” to display the AutoPlay window.
