How To Optimize Windows 10 For Gaming

In this tutorial, we are going to see how to optimize Windows 10 for gaming. To enjoy the best possible gaming experience on your Windows 10 PC, some settings are necessary. So let’s take a look together at the different ways to optimize your Windows 10 PC for gaming.

Before applying the different optimizations. The settings below will in no way improve the graphics or fluidity of the games you play. They simply allow you to optimize the Windows 10 operating system for video games.

If, for example, your PC has trouble running a particular game, look at your hardware (graphics card, processor, RAM, etc.). You may have a component that is simply obsolete and prevents your PC from running games in good conditions.

Enable Windows 10 game mode

When Game Mode is enabled on your Windows 10 PC, it prevents Windows Update from installing drivers and sending reboot notifications. In addition, it helps to achieve a more stable frame rate depending on the system and the game you are playing.

To enable or disable Game Mode:

Step 1: Click on the Start button at the bottom left of your screen.

Step 2: Click on Settings.

Step 3: Select Gaming.

Step 4: Then go to Game Mode and turn Game Mode on.

Maximum power plan to improve the performance of your Windows 10 PC

By default, Windows 10 is configured to use the normal (balanced) power mode. To improve the overall performance of your system, select High Performance or even Optimal Performance (if available).

This option will give your PC better performance at the cost of higher power consumption and temperature. For this reason, it is best to enable this Windows 10 optimization on a desktop PC rather than a laptop.

Step 1: Open the Start menu, then type Control Panel.

Step 2: Then type power in the search bar and click Choose a power plan.

Step 3: From there, check the Optimal Performance or High Performance box.

Disable Nagle’s algorithm

Nagle’s algorithm allows Windows 10 to bundle small TCP packets into one before sending them. This prevents those with a very small payload from being sent to the queue.

However, enabling Nagle’s algorithm on your computer can contribute to latency issues in some online games, especially in FPS or MMORPG. By disabling this algorithm, small packets will be transferred without delay, thus reducing your latency.

To disable Nagle’s algorithm and improve game performance in Windows 10, do the following:

Step 1: Right-click on the Start button, select Run.

Step 2: Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.

Step 3: After that, navigate to the following Registry key:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces

Step 4: In the left pane you will see several keys with names consisting of letters and numbers. To access the correct key {NIC} which is your network card identifier, open them all until you see your IP address in front of “DhcpIPAdress”.

If you don’t know your IP address, press Windows + X and click on Windows PowerShell (admin). Then type ipconfig. Look for the IPv4 address listed under your current connection (usually Ethernet or wireless LAN).

Step 6: From there, create two DWORD values: name the first one TcpAckFrequency and the other TCPNoDelay. Once you have created the values, double-click on each of them and enter 1 in the Value data field and validate with OK. These two new values allow you to deactivate Nagle’s algorithm.

If you encounter problems, change their values to 0.

Keep your drivers updated

The graphics card (GPU) is one of the most important parts of a computer to get good performance in games. However, it is absolutely necessary that it has the latest graphics drivers so that it can deliver its full potential in the latest games.

Although you can download driver updates for your graphics card via the Device Manager, I personally prefer to go through the official sites (AMD or NVIDIA).
