How to Make a Program Run on Startup in Windows 10

In this tutorial, we are going to see how to make a program run on startup in Windows 10. If you use your PC regularly, it is very likely that you systematically run the same applications each time (your Web browser, your email program, your word processor, etc.). This is an almost daily routine that takes a few minutes if you have a hard disk or a few seconds if you have an SSD.

To save a little time and comfort, you can perfectly ask Windows to automatically open your favorite software at each startup. Some programs offer this option when they are installed, but not all do. Fortunately, this does not prevent you from doing it whenever you want. The operation is simple you can easily change the list of programs that run at each startup whenever you want.

How to Make a Program Run on Startup in Windows 10

A few steps are enough to let a software installed on your PC run automatically each time Windows starts. Note that this permission is not permanent: you can remove it whenever you want.

Step 1: Click on the Start menu, at the bottom left of the Windows taskbar, and scroll through the list of software installed on your PC.

Step 2: Right-click on the application you want to launch automatically, and then from the pop-up menu that appears, select More. In the submenu that appears, click on Open file location. Note that if this option does not appear, it means that the software cannot be launched automatically at startup.

Step 3: A File Explorer window opens, displaying the Programs folder containing all the items listed in the Start menu, with the program already selected. As you can see, this is actually a shortcut.

Step 4: Right-click on the selected program and choose Copy from the context menu that appears.

Step 5: Right-click on the Start button, select Run.

Step 6: In the input field, type shell:startup, then press Enter or click OK to confirm.

Step 7: The Startup folder opens. Don’t be surprised if it is empty the first time you open it, it is normal. You could find it “by hand”, without using the Run command, but the path is complex to find it in the Windows tree.

Step 8: Right-click in a free area of the window and click Paste to past the shortcut. So the software you selected is copied to the Startup folder.

That’s it! Now, this software will run automatically every time you start Windows.
