How to Enable Sandbox in Windows 10

In this tutorial, we are going to see how to enable Sandbox in Windows 10. Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise users have access to Windows Sandbox that allows you to safely run suspicious applications or files in an isolated desktop environment. This ensures that your PC will not be infected by any viruses, ransomware, or other malware.

How does this sandbox work? What are its advantages? How to install Windows Sandbox? That’s what we’ll see together in this tutorial.

What is Windows Sandbox?

Windows Sandbox is a native feature available in Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise (version 18035 minimum) that allows you to create a Windows environment within Windows. The main purpose of this feature is to be able to run potentially dangerous programs or files without affecting your host computer. So you can do whatever you want in Windows Sandbox, because once closed, all the software and files will be deleted.

Windows Sandbox works like a virtualization tool such as VMWare or VirtualBox. To install a new instance of Windows 10 isolated from your main installation and use it in good conditions, you need :

  • an AMD64 architecture
  • a BIOS that supports hardware virtualization (to be enabled in the BIOS options)
  • at least 4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)
  • at least 1GB of free space (SSD recommended)
  • at least 2-core CPU (4 cores with hyperthreading recommended)
