How to Enable Dark Mode in Windows 10

In this tutorial, we are going to see how to enable dark mode in Windows 10. Windows offers a setting called Dark Mode that applies a dark theme to applications provided by Windows Store. This doesn’t affect most desktop applications, but we have other solutions for those. Here’s how to make your entire desktop (or as much of it as possible) dark.
 

How to Enable Dark Mode in Windows 10

 

 
Step 1: Click on the Start button at the bottom left of your screen.
 

 
Step 2: Click on Settings.
 

 
Step 3: Click on Personalization.
 

Step 4: In the left menu click on “Colors”.
 

 
 
Step 5: Scroll down and select Dark option in the section Choose your default app mode.
 

 

Enable dark mode for Windows desktop applications

The issue with Dark Mode setting is that it does not affect Windows desktop theme. Desktop applications such as File Explorer continue to use the light, normal theme.

Windows has a built-in dark theme for desktop applications, but it’s probably not ideal. To enable it, go to Settings > Ease of Access.
 

 
In the left menu select High contrast, On the right, activate the option Turn on high contrast and choose the theme Black high contrast.
 

 
 
If you set this theme to high contrast, most desktop applications will display a dark background. Yet, they don’t look very good. High contrast themes are an accessibility feature designed to increase the contrast, so that the screen is easier to read and understand. They don’t look as smooth as a modern dark theme.
 

 
At least Microsoft has applied the dark theme to the file explorer.
