World Wide Web History

In this tutorial, we are going to see the history of World Wide Web. The “Web” is a contraction of the “World Wide Web” (hence the acronym www), which is one of the possibilities offered by the Internet network to navigate between documents linked by hypertext links.

The concept of the Web was developed at CERN in 1991 by a team of researchers including Tim-Berners LEE, the creator of the concept of the hyperlink, considered today as the founding father of the Web.

The principle of the Web is based on the use of hyperlinks to navigate between documents (called “web pages”) thanks to a software called a browser. A web page is thus a simple text file written in a description language (called HTML), allowing to describe the layout of the document and to include graphical elements or links to other documents using tags.

Beyond the links connecting formatted documents, the web becomes meaningful with the HTTP protocol allowing to link documents hosted by remote computers (called web servers, instead of the client represented by the browser). On the Internet, documents are thus identified by a unique address, called URL, allowing to locate a resource on any server of the Internet network.

What is a website?

A website (also called an internet site or a personal website) is a set of HTML files stored on a computer(webserver) permanently connected to the internet and hosting the web pages.

A website is usually structured around a central page, called “home page” and offering links to a set of other pages hosted on the same server, and sometimes links called “external”, that is to say, pages hosted by another server.

A URL is presented in the following form:

http://stackhowto.com/world-wide-web-history/

Let’s take a closer look at this address:

  • http:// indicates that we want to browse the web using the HTTP protocol, the protocol used by default to navigate between web pages. There are other protocols, corresponding to other uses of the Internet.
  • www.stackhowto.com The second part of this address is called the domain name. A website can be hosted by several servers, all belonging to the same domain: www.stackhowto.com, www2.stackhowto.com, intranet.stackhowto.com, etc.
  • /world-wide-web-history/ is used to indicate the location of the document on the server.
