What is HUB in Networking?

In this tutorial, we are going to see What is HUB in networking?

A hub is a piece of hardware that concentrates network traffic from multiple hosts and regenerates the signal. The hub is thus an entity with a certain number of ports (it has as many ports as it can connect machines together, usually 4, 8, 16, or 32). Its unique goal is to recover the binary data arriving on a port and to broadcast them on all the ports. Like the repeater, the hub operates at level 1 of the OSI model, which is why it is sometimes called a multi-port repeater.

The Hub allows several machines to be connected to each other, often in a star configuration, which is why it is called a hub, to illustrate the fact that it is the point of communication between the different machines.

Types of Hubs

There are several categories of Hubs:

  • Active Hubs: they are powered by electricity and allow the signal to be regenerated on the different ports
  • Passive Hubs: they only allow the signal to be broadcast to all connected hosts without amplification

Connecting several hubs

It is possible to connect several hubs together in order to concentrate a larger number of machines, this is called a daisy chain connection. To do this, you simply connect the hubs using a crossover cable, i.e. a cable linking the reception connectors at one end to the reception connectors at the other.

Hubs usually have a special port called “uplink” that allows you to use a straight-through cable to connect two hubs together. There are also hubs that can automatically cross or uncross their ports depending on whether it is connected to a host or a hub.

If you want to connect several machines to your Internet connection, a hub is not enough. It is necessary to use a router or switch or let the computer be connected directly to the connection as a gateway (so it will remain constantly on when the other computers in the network want to access the Internet).
