ICMP Protocol

In this tutorial, we are going to see What is ICMP Protocol? The ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is a protocol that allows handling the information relative to the errors of the connected machine. Given the few controls that the IP protocol carries out, it does not allow for the correction of these errors but rather for the communication of these errors to the protocols of neighboring layers. Thus, the ICMP protocol is used by all routers, which use it to signal an error (called Delivery Problem).

ICMP messages are encapsulated:

ICMP error messages are sent over the network as a datagram, just like any other data. Thus, error messages can themselves be subject to errors.

However, in case of an error on a datagram transporting an ICMP message, no error message is delivered to avoid a “snowball” effect in case of an incident on the network.
