Interconnection Networks

In this tutorial, we are going to see What is interconnection networks in computer?

A local area network is used to interconnect the computers of an organization, however an organization usually has several local area networks, so it is sometimes necessary to link them together. In this case, specific equipment is required.

When two networks of the same type are involved, it is sufficient to pass the frames from one to another. In the opposite case, when the two networks use different protocols, it is essential to proceed to a protocol conversion before transferring the frames. Thus, the equipment to be used is different depending on the configuration in which you are.
 
 

Interconnection equipment

The main equipment used in local networks are :

  • Repeaters, allowing to regenerate a signal
  • Hubs, to connect several hosts together
  • Bridges, to connect local networks of the same type
  • Switches, to connect various elements while segmenting the network
  • Gateways, to connect local networks of different types
  • Routers, allowing to link many local networks in such a way to allow the circulation of data from one network to another in an optimal way
  • B-router, combining the functionalities of a router and a bridge
