The wireless local area network (WLAN) is a wireless LAN is a network that can cover the equivalent of a company’s local area network, which means a range of 100 meters. It allows linking together the terminals present in the coverage area.
 


 
 
There are several competing technologies:

Wifi (or IEEE 802.11), supported by the WECA (Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance) offers speeds up to 54Mbps over a distance of several hundred meters.
 


 
hiperLAN2 (HIgh-Performance Radio LAN 2.0), a European standard developed by the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). HiperLAN 2 provides a theoretical data rate of 54 Mbps over an area of 100 meters in the frequency range between 5,150 and 5,300 MHz.
