What is SAP Fiori?

The new design concept from SAP called “SAP Fiori” was published in 2013. The well-known SAP user interfaces, which seemed overloaded with diverse and varied functions, led to long training periods, as the entire spectrum of functions was represented. With SAP Fiori, user-friendliness is increased. The individualization of the respective role of the user with the required functions results from the clearly structured and tidy presentation.

What is SAP Fiori?

Fiori is a new design concept that simplifies the user guidance of SAP applications and makes it clearer. SAP Fiori creates a uniform user interface that is nevertheless adapted to the user role on all company applications. The design can be used on all end devices and it is compatible with all SAP applications of the newer generation. Functionally, the previous features of SAP are still available. Getting started is much easier with the comparable structure of consumer apps.

Design concept: Five Core Principles

The Fiori design concept has five core principles.

Role of the respective user

The basis for SAP Fiori is the role of the respective user. Defined applications and functions are made visible via the role to ensure clarity.

Adaptability

The adaptability represents the second core principle so that an automatic adjustment to the individual usage scenarios takes place. The adaptability becomes clear with the usability on all mobile devices and stationary computers for all operating systems and browsers.

Simplicity

Fiori is easy. With a clear design and a focus on the essential tasks, functions, and activities, the work is simplified for the user.

Coherence

The Fiori design concept is coherent, which is the fourth core principle. The application is possible in all applications. A uniform user experience is created regardless of the use of SAP. Employees in the HR department benefit from using Fiori, for example, when processing vacation requests, similar to employees in controlling when checking current business figures.

Appealing presentation

Higher work productivity as well as an increase in motivation is realized with the help of the fifth core principle, the appealing presentation. The intuitive, user-friendly layout optimizes the user’s work experience.

The 1-1-3 principle was introduced through the new concept with regard to the SAP design. This information architecture approach means that for an application each individual business use case should be mapped for exactly one defined user group with a maximum of three navigation steps.

Technical background

Various technologies are required to use Fiori apps.

OData enables access to data from various software systems via an HTTP-based protocol. By using OData, Fiori applications can generate data from the respective SAP system as well as from third-party applications, which enables the integration of data from various sources.

The use of the SAPUI5 surface technology ensures optimized development of applications and is used in addition to Fiori in various other applications such as HTML5 or JavaScript. SAPUI5 is focused on lean business applications and supports all SAP products.

With the Fiori Launchpad, apps used on a daily basis can be placed in a targeted manner so that users have direct access to their workspaces. The Launchpad is the company-specific customizable home page that helps users access the apps set up for their role.

What are the advantages of SAP Fiori?

With SAP Fiori, the focus is less on individual features and more on the users and their work experience. Based on the coherent presentation form, departments within an organization can work together quickly, effectively, and better, as the system-side focus on the essential work activities is present within the respective team.

Another advantage is the associated increase in employee motivation since every user can work on the corresponding processes in his field of activity more quickly and in a more targeted manner.
With the UX concept, any application can be implemented in just a few steps, stationary or mobile. Since entries can also be made directly on site, various transfer times are eliminated and the duration of processing a process and the error rate can be reduced.

For companies, Fiori saves time-consuming and expensive training because it is user-friendly and easy for beginners.
